Why Hedonism Fails In a Collapse

Survival comes first, kicking ass (and having fun) comes second, if at all:

A Triad-style gang suspected of using a powerful Colombian drug known as ‘The Devil’s Breath’ to send victims into a zombie-like trance before robbing them has been arrested in Paris.

Two Chinese women, aged 42 and 59, and a man have allegedly targeted dozens of people by blowing the hazardous substance – related to deadly nightshade – into their faces on the street.

Within minutes, the victims are said to fall into a hypnotic state ‘under total sway’ of their attackers, with one victim handing over £73,500 in valuables and cash alone, French investigators said.

Demencia Black, a drug dealer in the capital of Bogota, said the drug is frightening for the simplicity in which it can be administered.

He told Vice that Scopolamine can be blown in the face of a passer-by on the street, and within minutes, that person is under the drug’s effect – scopolamine is odourless and tasteless.

Who would meet a couple of little old Chinese women, and be ready for them to blow some toxic death cloud in your face and then rob you blind as you lay in the street helpless? You can see how adaptive racism is, if it can trigger a reflexive distrust of others. The more out-grouping your are, the more adptive you are. The ultimate would be if you could hate every race, including your own. Then you wouldn’t trust anybody who you didn’t know, and you’d be totally set for K-selection.

When everyone is desperate, every trip outside the wire is a risk, every person you encounter a danger, and you can never prepare for everything. It is an interesting contrast with free resource availability, where hedonistic exploration is the norm, and even reproductively advantageous. The two conditions really are yin and yang, in every respect.
