As President Trump predicted, the media is very disappointed:
President Donald Trump doesn’t have recordings of his conversations with then-FBI Director James Comey, the president revealed on Twitter Thursday, capping weeks of speculation about whether such tapes exist.
With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2017…whether there are “tapes” or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.

Still, what amused me was this old quote of Comey’s:
I asked — the president tweeted on Friday, after I got fired, that I better hope there’s not tapes. I woke up in the middle of the night on Monday night, because it didn’t dawn on me originally that there might be corroboration for our conversation. There might be a tape.
What that means is when President Trump tweeted that, Comey immediately saw the tweet as Trump making fun of the surveillance state for recording everything. It never even crossed Comey’s mind that Trump might be saying he recorded the conversation himself. Only later, after the media began speculating, did it dawn on Comey that Trump might have meant something else.
It tells you something about Comey’s view of how the government works. He recognized that confidential conversations he and President Trump had might have been recorded by somebody. And as President Trump’s Tweet shows, even the President has no idea who, in the government he ostensibly runs, would have been doing that or where they might put the recordings.
Now that is crazy.
