You have to be careful with punches though. You do not want a hand injury in the middle of a fight, which is always a risk even if you’ve hardened your hands. Losing a hand in a fight will suck, and it can happen completely randomly when you are trying to hit a moving sphere of bone in the unpredictable environs of a fight.

Bas Ruten is a legendary MMA fighter, but in his pancrase fights, he dominates with open handed palm strikes to opponent’s heads.

To give you an idea of what can be developed with a heavy bag, speed bag, and some hand hardening, here is Bas rupturing a spleen in a simulation:

Now a real body would probably give way a lot more than that dummy, which was braced and absorbing the full blow. But Bas still punched that spleen with 1300 ft lbs of energy. For comparison, a Winchester Super X 12ga 2 3/4″ 1oz slug hits with 1310 ft-lbs of energy at 50 yards. And that slug is blowing straight through you and carrying much, if not most of that kinetic energy out the back of your body, whereas that punch is delivering all of that energy into the tissue. A shot like Bas delivered, placed reliably to a liver, could have better dropping statisitics than smaller FMJ handgun cartridges hitting random parts of a human body.

Here Bas delivers a liver shot with his knee to end a Pancrase match, to show the power of the liver shot. It happens at about 3:15:

You can only develop the wrist-firmness of Bas, and forcefulness of your strikes, on a heavy bag. If you have not had a history of hitting the heavy bag and you try to punch it full force, your first hits will snap the wrist around, and it will feel almost as if you ruptured ligaments right after the hit. With time, your neurological system and the muscles and ligaments around the wrist will develop the ability and feel to firmly and comfortably hold the wrist in the perfect position to not snap one way or another, and to deliver the full force you put into the punch cleanly through the wrist and into your target.

Now Bas was using gloves on the spleen demonstration which would let him hit harder, but his wrists were not taped. I would draw from that, that if you trained even close to that level of power, and wore gloves with lead powder in the knuckles (which are not overly obvious), or even just a harder visco-elastic padding like silly putty, you would be a potent close-in weapon.

You would probably be better armed for close in combat with that, than you would be with a little Beretta 25 ACP, if you could deliver that force to the liver reliably.

Of course nothing can compare with a decent firearm, if you can carry it. But if you cannot carry a firearm, such as a European, you do have options that would be fully legal that you can pursue, that would improve survivability considerably in today’s environment.

It is food for thought.

But good on Tommy for giving that migrant a little bit of amygdala to get him to stop harassing Italians, especially when he is the interloper in their homeland.
