There is an old but great post here on Free Republic written by Matt Bracken, author of such excellent books as Enemies, Foreign and Domestic.
Every post collapse option has benefits and detriments. If you are near a lot of allies, there will probably also be enemies about. If you are in the boondocks, you’ll have fewer enemies, but you also won’t have allies. Warm areas where food can easily be grown will probably have more criminality than cold areas where you have to plan more to survive.
The Sailboat is another option, and probably not a half-bad one, if you can sail in a flotilla with likeminded individuals. Parts of the Bahamas are just 50 miles off the Florida coast, if you need US medical, and you can have your weaponry on board there. Plus, eating a constant diet of fresh caught grilled Mahi Mahi and Rock Lobster while the savages rape rob and pillage in the US doesn’t sound so bad.
Additionally, a liquidated home equity, stored in some form of value that won’t depreciate as much as dollars, might serve you well after the collapse has sorted out the economic mess.
Food for thought. It does sound fun.
Lived on a schooner for 20 years. Wife wanted a house, so I got a better job and bought a house on three acres. Problem is that it is in Mass. I don’t think I can live here on retirement money. I still have the boat, but needs work. Moving on board is a good way to escape. You’d better have fair warning though. A lot of people will have the same idea and will try to hijack you. There are still pirates out there and the US government is one of them. There is still much harassment by them and the have now abridged everyone’s right to free use of the waterways, (including harvesting of seaweed, RI bill of rights!). Building her for SHTF reasons was one of the intents, but it never happened. I had no idea things would get much worse. Are we correct in thinking that this insanity can continue? I don’t know. Never underestimate what people will put up with as long as they have food and shelter.
