A 40-year-old paralyzed man from Poland can now walk again with the aid of a frame after breakthrough surgery transplanted cells from his nose into his spinal cord, which had been severed in a knife attack.
The procedure effectively provided a “bridge” over the injury site so nerve cells – encouraged by the special nose cells – could regrow across the scar tissue.
Darek Fidyka was left paralyzed from the chest down after suffering stab wounds to his back in 2010. After 19 months of treatment at a Polish hospital, his doctors say he has recovered some voluntary movement and some sensation in his legs.
Mr. Fidyka is continuing to improve further than predicted – he is able to drive and live more independently.
There’s video of the firefighter in the excerpt above pedaling around a park on a tricycle, and you’d never know he had been fully paralyzed – and they say as his brain adapts to control the new neural connections, he will still advance more. From bladder control to sensation, he says it is all coming back.
As I look at the Apocalypse, I fear little. But I do weep at the thought of how our amazing technological and biomedical advances will stop coming. That alone, in a court of law, should produce a death sentence for every idiot in power whose wasteful spending crashed the system and brought this all to a stand still.
At least this advance was made. If this is the first iteration, if is not at all ignorant to assume that in the near future this will evolve into an incredible opportunity to heal for people, often warriors, who lived life at the edge and got caught by fate.
If we embrace the collapse and all its misery, avoid measures to blunt it’s effect that would also prolong it, and get the necessary reset over with as quickly and as fully as possible, this ascension to greatness can return.
But in the interim, we will endure the wages of rabbitry.
