First Trump proposes a big, beautiful wall. Then Britain and France decide to build a Great Wall.
Now it is Malaysia and Thailand:
The leaders of Thailand and Malaysia agreed on Friday to boost security cooperation and consider building a border wall to combat transnational crime and smuggling, an idea that appears to be gaining popularity elsewhere in the world. People-trafficking and the smuggling of contraband, including drugs and petrol, have flourished along the Thai-Malay border for years until a crackdown by Thai officials on human traffickers caused some of the routes to shut down last year. Analysts say separatist insurgents operating in Thailand’s deep south use Malaysia as a base to launch and plan their attacks.
More and more I am seeing virtue signaling, such as people demeaning a wall and emphasizing the “unity of all mankind,” as instinctual. Their amygdalae are sated, and in such a state, any triggering, such as any form of bad think, or any idea which might cause negative social repercussions, will be profoundly unpleasant. On the other side, any action or idea which furthers the good feels of being shielded from conflict is a little burst of dopamine, further shutting their amygdala off, and further addicting them to this pattern of behavior.
Now, as things turn K, bad feels have reached a level where the increase in bad feels from espousing the idea of building a wall is a negligible increase compared to the baseline. On the other side, the safety it afford is sizable compared to the alternative, so the wall becomes a net amygdala-relaxant.
Most people are thinking with their amygdala, and abiding by the subtle emotional pushes it gives. Logic, reason, and prudence have literally no role in their cognitive processes.
The scariest thought – if things were a little more r, Bernie would be winning the Presidency in a landslide. Fortunately, with an Apocalypse on the way, Bernie will not be holding any high office any time soon. These are Trump’s times.
