Suppressors Glow, But Do Not Melt If Your Rate Of Fire Is High Enough

Interesting experiment:

… a few people have gone out of the way to attempt to melt a silencer from excessive rounds, then shooting a disintegrating round into a target from two feet away. But, have you ever seen one take so many rounds it melted?

Great little gif of somebody lighting up a silencer like a light bulb at the link. Of course he appears to be using full pressure 5.56 rounds on full auto. I am not sure if 9mm subsonic could do that as easily. The again, if you are firing full auto 5.56, I am not sure how concealed you will be, and I am pretty sure whoever you are shooting at will realize you are shooting fairly quickly, silencer or not.

Word is suppressors will be over the counter soon under Trump, as the NRA wants them made freely available as hearing protection.

It is about time.

You can help spread r/K Theory because it is a lot cheaper than full auto fire

Suppressers aren’t magic, and they aren’t silencers. There is still a sound, especially if you are not using special, low power subsonic ammunition. There is nothing you can do about the crack of the sonic boom on a 2200 fps battle rifle round.

The main benefit is indeed protecting your own hearing. There is a side benefit of making it a little more difficult for someone else to tell what direction you are firing from, but it’s mainly about yourself and the friendly people around you.

It’s a travesty that sound suppressors aren’t available over the counter. Continuous exposure to the full blast of any centerfire rifle (and lots of pistols, especially indoors) even with the best plugs and/or muffs available, still saws away at hearing.

Sadly, we’ve been governed by idiots who get their “knowledge” about guns from TV and movies, where “silencers” produce silent guns and people shoot AK47’s endlessly without hearing protection yet somehow can hear whispers moments later. In fact, anyone who “lived” in the Walking Dead show would be deaf as a post after a couple “episodes.”
