Stephen Hawking Sees r/K in the Universe

… and it may not end well for us:

Stephen Hawking has tackled the mysteries of the universe his entire life.

Now the world-renowned scientist has some new things to say about a potential alien invasion .

“If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” Professor Hawking told El País .

“Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach,” he said.

Seeing this is natural if you are K-selected. Resources are limited, the world is competitive, and you need to be careful.

But if you are a rabbit, the very idea is so painful to think about you will deny it being possible. Aliens will be wise and benevolent, with a burning desire to “serve humans.” We even have idiots beaming messages out to the universe to make sure everybody knows where to find us – as if we didn’t already have immigration problems enough.

We’ve been beaming signals out into space for as long as there has been radio; that’s over 100 years. Any alien race sophisticated enough to detect the local rock station you hear on your car stereo can get an exact fix on our location with directional antennas super easy. So that ship has already sailed. The real problem is these idiots will probably try to collaborate with our new alien overlords should they ever show up. Hell, if they came and promised to wipe out all the rabbits I might even welcome them myself.

In all seriousness though, we probably don’t have much to worry about yet. 100 light years is a long way unless someone out there figures out some sort of FTL drive for moving spaceships around. I don’t see that happening anytime soon, if it is even possible.

My favorite part of Independence Day is when the giant alien death ray is fired right into the group of “WELCOME ALIENS” partiers.

It does remind me how Star Trek had this duality of humanity being perfect and utopian while threats only existed in the form of outsiders and aliens. What do you think of this episode review AC? I used to think this episode was nonsensical, where a weak alien race with no weapons uses an amnesia-ray on the Enterprise crew to destroy the race’s enemies. But in the light of r/K it’s obvious MacDuff was the r manipulating two groups of K to fight.

The idea occurs again between the characters when MacDuff tries to convince Worf (an obvious K) that the captain might prove too weak and Worf may need to take over. All the r can do is convince K’s to fight for him.
