A Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentenced a man to death Saturday for allegedly posting content on Facebook that insulted Islam.

Taimoor Raza was originally arrested last year after he unsuspectingly engaged in a debate over the religion with a counter-terrorism agent, according to The Guardian.

“My brother indulged in a sectarian debate on Facebook with a person, who we later come to know, was a [counter-terrorism department] official with the name of Muhammad Usman,” Waseem Abbas told The Guardian.

The 30-year-old is being punished under the country’s severe anti-blasphemy laws, which forbids any criticism of the prophet Muhammad and the faith in general.

Ideologies that cannot tolerate any dissenting beliefs tend to be ideologies that are papering over real insecurities of the individuals who hold the ideology sacred. In that regard, it is clear radical Islam is an escapist belief system which focuses on assuaging the amygdalae of adherents, rather than bettering their stand in the world in a practical fashion.

Which brings us to the fact you can probably discern between escapist rabbit belief systems, clung to desperately by adherents as escapes from a world whose realities they fear, from more self-improving, reality-based systems. Simply assess how successfully adherents navigate the world and achieve success and greatness. Those belief systems which guide the believers to tangible success are doing so because they are embracing reality, good and bad, in an effort to guide the individual practitioner to avoid the bad and achieve success. Those which fail probably do so because their system is based on ignoring reality, while trying to hack the brain to simply force a belief of superiority in the mind as an amygdala-relaxant. That is why Muslims nations tend to be less than civilized and developed.

Alternately, you can judge the system by the degree of emotional and extremist measures employed upon those who deny the belief system. Those who deny a reality-based, self-improvement system will be met with argument since the goal of such a system is to navigate to truth, and such a system inherently builds amygdala-tolerance. Those who deny rabbit belief systems will meet with as violent and emotional a response as can be mustered easily, since such opposition is a threat to the only cognitive band-aid holding their façade of sanity together. Peel it away at your own peril.
