I posted this in the comments, but figured I’d expand on it somewhat and stick it here too, to see if anyone else has noticed anything like this:
In affect psychology there is a disgust affect, which involves pulling the nasolabial folds up and outward, often while curling the lip somewhat. Here is one example:
To get the most out of that image, cover over everything above the middle of the nose with your hand, and just look at the upper lip and mouth. That is an instinctual facial response to disgust stimuli. It is innate, and there from birth.
I have noted a subset of gays exhibit a variation of this that pulls the naolabial fold outward slightly more than simple disgust, and often includes a nostril flare. I also notice this in girls who have been sexually abused. I think the first time I noticed it was in a young brunette pornstar who was profiled on Nightline. I do not remember her name, but I do remember she came from a Mormon family, and they said she was sexually abused at an early age by a relative, maybe fourteen. In the episode she immediately fell for a male costar on a trip to Italy, until he turned a porn scene into a violent scene, inexplicably transitioning to choking her, pulling her up by the neck, and slapping her back and forth from side to side while holding he up by her neck, as he acted out the acts they were assigned. She was wrecked right after it, crying and acting like it was nothing at the same time, as a crew member tried to comfort her. It was pretty awful. But all along the way as they interviewed her, I couldn’t help but notice what looked odd to me – that strange flaring of the nostrils and pulling that nasolabial fold up and outward to each side. Then I began to notice it in many, but not all, gays, usually the ones who seem the most neurotic (Milo does not have it, FWIW).
Hef is an excellent example of this – I would almost say textbook. In fact, he may be the most extreme example I have ever seen:
Cover over everything above the middle of Hef’s nose, and focus on the upper lip and mouth. Notice also Hef has no upper lip. It is curled under. That is usually a sign of quickness to anger or more often frustration.
Interestingly Hef himself spoke of having banged guys, and a commenter here said there was a book which said he kept gay porn playing on the TV while he was having anal sex with the girls. It would not surprise me if he had some sort of molestation history.
Here is a gay guy who has it to a much lesser degree, but he is much younger:
Notice, he is even curling the upper lip like the model in the first photo. Also, notice he is a different model of gay from Milo, psychologically, so I assume it means something psychological.
Here is Elton John:
Liberace:
Female comedian and lesbian Wanda Sykes:
Rosie O’Donnell:
Ellen, and her then girlfriend Portia Del Rossi:
To me the expression is kind of like smelling something disgusting, and being disgusted by it. Given gays show structural anomalies in their amygdala in the literature, it is interesting an anomalous facial feature associated with disgust, which is intimately associated with amygdala, would be prevalent among many of them.
I make that expression myself in a mirror, and try to visualize what I feel, as affect psychology advises you do to understand affect, but it is deeper than an emotion. It is a mixture of disgust, horror, and dislike/extreme contempt for a person or situation. I almost wonder if the act of molestation is so intense for some, and it triggers that mixture of emotions and feelings so intensely, it burns that mixture of emotions into the brain so deeply that they wear the affect of that experience the rest of their lives. Once burned in, it always shows, even when they smile, or try to appear neutral. It might even be some sort of outward manifestation of a fundamental change in their amygdala.
I do not see this in every gay, or to the degree I see it in Sykes or Liberace. Milo doesn’t have it, nor does he look to me like he will get it when he gets older. I haven’t checked how many gays exhibit it as a percentage, and I have seen it in heterosexual girls who experienced sexual abuse on true crime shows several times. In some of those cases, girls in their early teens exhibited it. I cannot remember seeing it in a person who I judged to be of low amygdala and conservative disposition, though it is not impossible that affect could result from a physical/structural, rather than psychological origin, and thus just be there independent of amygdala-status.
I thought it was interesting, though not really that new. Affect psychology has been all about this type of thing for decades now, although this is the first time I have seen it applied to gays specifically.
finally, a reader wanted a facial bifurcation of Hef, but I will begin with the top of his left (true) side face, which appears quite sad and strained to me:
Now with the right side he wanted to project to the world, which was happy, amused, and game for anything:

Is it hidden fear?
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=fear+face&t=ffab&ia=images&iax=1
Yes. Make the fear face, tighten down your eyes. Which makes a weird glare. (DeGenerit)
Close your mouth and smile up the corners.
Kinda gives you a weird feeling
Wow. Does it ever. That is more than an emotion, it is almost a physical response, like fear would produce. It must be bizarre, if they think everyone feels that when they smile. ‘m a bit of an Aspie, so if I was like them, I would one day just ask, “Why do we have to smile like this? Who wants to make this expression?”
I wonder if they know other people feel completely different when smiling? So strange.
That is an interesting idea. You know, it might be a flavor of it. I notice fear of being hit by a car seems to produce a slightly different expression from fear of a disgusting thing like being grossed out by being covered in buckets of green elephant mucus.
It might not be the shock of the actual molestation, but rather a constant fear of the idea that it is going to happen again which is everpresent between molestations, and they are helpless to stop it. That might be a constant expression of the affect that drills it in.
Disgust is fear with anger, “I will disinfect you from the earth.”
This face reading is pretty cool.
Do you suppose the aspie eye contact thing is just not wanting to see how bad things are?
My belief is that for a large part of that spectrum, we will find something in their GI Tracts that is producing some sort of receptor agonist that affects the amygdala particularly. Just like Alcohol relaxes you and makes you feel you can do normally stressful things with ease, my guess is there is a bug in them eating the nutrients they eat, and producing something that is drifting into the blood like alcohol would, and doing the opposite. In the most extreme cases, what they feel is probably like the most shy guy locking eye contact on the most beautiful, desirable girl in the world, times one thousand, and it is doing it all the time on anything that is moving, or unusual, or otherwise of note.
You might have something there. I’ve gone through drastic diet changes, which may have contributed to noticeable behavioral changes.
Of course, realization and disgust have had some effect on my demeanor, as well.
I don’t go out enough to test it much.
Realization is affecting me as well. I think I could accidently take my arm off with a chainsaw, and not freak out at all now. I’d just tourniquet the stump, wrap up the arm, and drive to the ER like I was getting a half gallon of milk. What would be would be.
If everyone is changing like this, we will be different people in five or six years, and totally apocalypse ready.
I’ve been pushing the idea of being ‘turned out’ in pimp language to describe the broken masses of leftists and moral degenerates. How society/mankind had millenia of horrors built up in their subconscious, not to mention the almost-daily recurrences that lead to one of two results: being brave in the face of this or being ‘turned out’.
Turned out means the person is not to be trusted in any way until one can verify their emergence from it into a place of healing and truth.
Here’s another interesting fact: watched the first episode of “The Deuce” (J. Franco in the porn/prostitution seedy 70s New York). The first episode has the lowest of the low IMO sitting in the bus station prowling for fresh meat. The two ‘bruthas’ are talking about Vietnam, Nixon and their convo concludes that Nixon is a pimp.
If we spread this concept, then there would be a lot of so-called grievance groups and fifth columnists (soft jihadis) who would be seen in an entirely different light, and would also be prevented from further ‘turning out’, as well as be held accountable for fixing these broken people.
Interesting idea.
If this is a result of abuse you can’t fail to pity these poor souls. Their fate was carved for them by a human spider.
Yeah, anyone can go off the rails at any time when we are in that early life stage, if we hit the wrong circumstances. And evil is always looking for a weak spot to exploit.
Just more reason to hate the leftists who will tolerate anything. This type of thing needs to be eradicated.
That these facial-structure tells can infer so much is impressive. A trained human could read them fairly quickly. A trained AI will be able to read everyone’s secrets, preferences, gender, r-K spectrum, race, IQ, age, stress-health and whether they are lying just from looking at their face for a few seconds of interaction. It’s a brave new world we are heading into, especially if humanoid robots/AI are walking around interacting with us. There will be no fooling them.
This is cutting edge stuff. So, if I may, I’ll add to the facial expression stuff with my Female psychopath look. I don’t notice this so much with Male psychopaths but Females in order to fake smile open their eyes in a “surprise” type effect. Often they add large open mouths. I think they have difficultly smiling with their eyes. Smiling with your eyes is almost impossible to explain, for me anyways, but it’s like pornography. You know it when you see it, someone smiling with their eyes. I think it’s easier to see in Women because we study their faces more than Men and expect more smiling from them. These are exaggerated but you can actually see them do this all the time.

I don’t know about this. Do you have examples of people without the naso labial fold when they smile? I just went through the 30 headshots on my firm’s website, and everyone has it whether smiling with open mouth or closed. And the folds are at least as widely spread as Elton John.
It is not the presence of the fold. It is the outward curvature of it, as especially in Wanda Sykes’ photo. Try doing it and imagining flaring your nostrils because you are smelling a revoltingly bad smell. It is different, and may take some conditioning to spot the difference between a normal nasolabial fold, and the outwardly pulled one with the nostril flare.
Some are more outwardly pulled than others, but of the ones that aren’t – Elton, Rosie, Ellen and the Queer Eye guy – what is it that separates their expression from a regular person’s? Is the shape of the mouth also a factor, or is it primarily the fold and the nostrils?
See the image I posted of Goodell vs Sykes, and the curve of the line. There is a difference between the line forming as a line, and it pulling at the upper corner, creating the disgust curve. These things make take hundreds of thousands of examinations to begin to be felt. One thing affect psychology teaches is you have to make the face yourself in a mirror, and try to feel what you would be feeling when you make it. The brain is funny that way, in that if you strike a pose, it works backward and triggers the feelings in the brain, even to the point striking a dominant pose can make people act more dominant.
In the picture a couple posts below of Goodell and the guy flipping him off, they appear to both have the outwardly pulled folds. Are they exhibiting the same traits as the people in this post? A compare/contrast analysis could be helpful to those like me with an untrained eye.
No, they both look different to me in this way. The guy giving the finger does not look at all like he is smelling something bad. His mouth is just as open as he can get it. Goodell could have just a touch of it except he is scrunching his upper lip a bit against his teeth, which I think undoes the effect. It is much different from this:
The difference is the curve of the line. Here are Goodell and Sykes, side by side with representations of the curve of their naso-labial lines under each picture:
Thanks for the analysis. Can definitely see the difference with Sykes.
I’m gay and I remember my boyfriend in the late 90’s would talk about “gay face” as to someone who looks like they smelled shit. Very interesting…..
By the way, emotional/physical abuse can be healed. U have to reexperience the old trapped energy which then releases and the neuroticism is cured. EMDR helps tons. So does diet and affirmations
Thank you for this post, AC!
