A good article on Police lessons from the Las Vegas shooting, with some advice for civilians:
Are you prepared for the victims to attack you? At 20:10, an officer advises all responding officers to lock their cruisers as citizens were entering the unlocked parked vehicles and trying to take the cruiser shotguns. At 36:00 an officer called for more units because he was “being over run” by a large group of citizens trying to steal his and other officers’ patrol cars.
This is the first time I’ve heard of this happening. We should be prepared for it…
As a bystander, don’t do anything stupid that will make the cops think you are a suspect. This both endangers you and reduces the number of cops who can actually catch the real suspect.
Citizens turned themselves into suspects by acting suspiciously during the event. Vehicles driving suddenly away from the scene drew police attention. So did a male wearing camouflage fatigues and carrying a black bag. A man ignoring police evacuation orders and walking away from cops when ordered to stop inside the casino was detained at gunpoint.
Another suspicious person was reported after he was noticed “squatting in the driveway” of a residential home nearby. A jeep was stopped after driving through police roadblocks.
Officers also swooped down on a man at the casino valet. He reportedly was armed with a gun and had “wires sticking out” of his vehicle. Officers believed it was a vehicle-carried IED.
Think about how your actions might be interpreted by officers at the scene or other panicking citizens. Don’t wave guns around. Don’t try to steal police cars or police shotguns. Get yourself to safety in an expeditious and calm manner. Don’t act suspiciously and draw police attention.
Again, I urge you to listen to this audio recording. The only way we can improve our response to future incidents is to better analyze the actions of killers and police responders in previous events.
Personally I feel citizens on site with guns have to take the initial fight to the shooters until cops arrive. But you have to keep in mind that those arriving cops will have no idea who you are, and in the heat of the moment they may not be able to ask before engaging you. Keep an eye out for them, and holster, conceal, and try to slip out of the line of fire as a victim without attracting attention if you can. Alternately, be ready to surrender fast, as best you can.
As for the citizens trying to steal cop cars, that is a head scratcher. Could be rabbits looking to flee, or hardened Combat Veterans going into combat mode and doing whatever they had to, to exfil their loved ones, though I would think the Vets would tend to not get sideways with Law Enforcement just for psychological reasons. It is like Marines attacking Army Soldiers for supplies in a firefight with terrorists.
Regardless of the origins, it just goes to show that when Apocalypse hits, amygdala will drive all sorts of insanity. You will not want to be recognized for having something others feel they need to survive or take care of their own. If regular country music fans are raiding police vehicles on a moment’s notice, the Apocalypse will be an animal house for regular citizens in a lawless environment filled with actual savages. These weren’t even the inner city savages after two weeks with every grocery store looted and burned to the ground, and no food anywhere for anyone.
Mark my words, the stories that come out of the inner cities after the economic collapse will be horrific.
Tell others about r/K Theory, because you can see the Apocalypse will be an animal house
From what I read, most of the cars stolen were being used to transport patients, something the cops were refusing to do.
To be clear, not sure that I have a problem with the cop’s stand — stopping the shooter comes first. At the same time, though… get what you need out of the car, and send the car to the hospital full of evacuees. God gave you brains to think — use them.
Maybe citizens with combat experience, but the average guy should get the hell out of that situation as fast as possible, armed or not. The adrenaline pumping through your body is going to wreak all kinds of havoc from perception to response times and memory. Overall it’s best to avoid massive, outdoor events like this concert completely, they’re impossible to secure. Imagine if this had been a rap concert, there’d be twice as many victims from all the people getting trampled, and you can bet cops would get killed too.
Apocalypse wise, you have to actually know everyone you are interacting with. Any stranger, regardless of identity, is another unknown and possible hurdle for already very stressed out people to have to deal with.

There was at least one report of people helping wounded victims by breaking into police cruisers to get police first aid kits. My guess is that the cops foolishly assumed these cases were random people going for shotguns, etc.
