It is actually posturing in preparation for an upcoming election, but it is both a sign of the left’s perception of a shift in the population’s sentiments, and something that will shift the Overton Window in the population even more.

Once the leftists begin espousing anti-migrant sentiments, no matter how vague, the effect on the populace’s opinions cannot be overestimated. Leftists will begin questioning their own adherence to those views, as the right will be invigorated by a sudden evaporation of any resistance to their assertions.

And as the right is invigorated, the purge approaches. Stopping migration is not the end of the rightward side of the spectrum. That is the midpoint between the left and right. The Crusades and a violent purge are what is at that far rightward end of the spectrum.
