The damage was done by landslides with flooding. Asheville sits on the French Broad River, which flows southeast through the center of town, from high in the Appalachian mountains. West of Asheville, along Interstate 40, the Pigeon River flows west into Tennessee, from high in the Appalachians. These two rivers’ valleys, like the many creek valleys in the affected areas, are deep and steep.
The mountains are 2,000 ft high and more, and very steep. As steep as bluffs. They’re heavily timbered, with old-growth trees.
Hurricane Helene dropped enough rain fast enough to wash whole mountainsides into the gorges of these rivers and creeks. The damage and death was more frm mud than from flood.
