Social Security money is taxed out of your income. The Fed keeps it as a tax-free loan to itself. Then it doles it back out to you, and clips “tax” from it again.
Don’s minions should have pointed that out to him a couple of elections ago.
Taxes on payments provided by the government itself are effectively a reduction in the payments, though somewhat disguised.
A hundred dollars in government salary, social security, or some other cash payment taxed at 25% is effectively the same as seventy five dollars of the same granted tax free. Of course it works the other way, so not taxing social security payments effectively increases the payments.
I don’t think its a huge deal, but its worth doing on transparency grounds.
