Here are some news stories that might be of interest. Most articles will be more or less summarized in the headline. You can skim the headlines and summaries, and click the links if they are of interest. Keep in mind, many of these reports are products of an unreliable news media, so although they will be what people are hearing and talking about, there is no guarantee any one of them is necessarily correct, and we have had cases of outright lies make it onto these pages.

We have an advertiser, The Daily Financial Trends – a financial news aggregator designed to deliver the data other financial sites deliver, but in a fraction of the time. Give them a click and see if you prefer getting your financial news there.

If you have clicked on the page for this News Brief, this is a link that will take you directly to the comments section.

Shooting happened at 6:11 on the official timeline, image of the gun is named 6.11.png:

President Trump’s heroic response to the assassination attempt left many Americans in awe and created a wave of support as well as a flood of high-profile endorsements.

$DJT shorts skyrocketed the week before the hit.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told ABC News in an interview on Tuesday that a decision was made to put local law enforcement inside the building that gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed on top of to shoot former President Donald Trump on Saturday instead of the rooftop due to the “safety factor” of putting someone on a “sloped roof.”

Not like there was anything he was doing which was unusual, which might cause surveillance to take a closer look.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle calls the 30 minutes between noticing and neutralizing shooter ‘a very short period of time.’

Dan Bongino – source tells him someone in law enforcement was supposed to be on roof but never showed up. This may have been the sniper team which decided it was too hot, so as Trump took the stage they went into the air conditioned building to just hang out. Also, Secret Service Director has been told by DHS and Biden admin to keep her mouth shut.

Thomas Crooks was spotted at the rally, photographed as suspicious, Secret Service was aware something was wrong, and officers were actively looking for him when he made his way onto the roof and fired at former President Donald Trump. It says snipers could not see him due to the pitch of the roof, but at this point, more excuses is not helping.

Another model shows the layout of the site, and how the bullets were flying.

Video at Michael Yon of a guy who was dressed like Secret Service, near Trump, who was kind of crouched down before the shot, as if he thought one was coming.

CNN says the shooter went through Secret Service security, while carrying a rangefinder.

A neighbor of the 20-year-old who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump said there have been pro-Trump signs on display in the yard of his family’s home.

So photographer Doug Mills who allegedly captured the photo of the bullet was also the photographer that took the photo of George Bush in the classroom on 9/11. To be the go-to guy for these pics, you must be trusted enough they can read you in without fear you will burn them.

US authorities were warned about a potential assassination plot against former President Donald Trump by Iran weeks before the deadly shooting at Saturday’s rally — underscoring concerns about the level of protection that the presidential candidate was given, according to a report. Supposedly they increased his security in response to the Iran assassination threat. Apparently there is a level of protection below the fat chick who could not even holster her gun, and she was the upgrade.

Video shows Secret Service tackling Trump, removing his shoes, and throwing them off the stage. Why would they do that? Wouldn’t you want a protectee able to run if need be?

Biden, when asked if it’s acceptable that he hasn’t heard from the Secret Service Director since the Trump assassination attempt says, “I’ve heard from him,” but the SS director is a WOMAN!

CNN contributor and former Biden White House communications director Kate Bedingfield firmly planted her foot in her mouth Monday when she urged Democrats to “turn their fire” on former President Donald Trump — less than 72 hours after he was nearly felled by an assassin’s bullet.

Adam Kinzinger day after Trump survives assassination tweets: Do not let up. Trump is a threat to democracy and he must be stopped.

Joe Biden will reportedly continue to frame former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy following the assassination attempt that nearly killed the former president.

DNC could nominate Biden virtually this month — as critics try to slam brakes.

GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz confronted former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy at the RNC Convention in Milwaukee on Tuesday, shouting, “What night are you speaking? Are you speaking tonight?” and adding, “If you took that stage you would booed off of it. You’d get booed off the stage!” McCarthy took off, but is surely nursing even ore of a grudge.

Suspect wielding knives ‘heard voices’ before being shot dead by cops near RNC: sources, witnesses.

HSI & Capitol Police surveilling the RNC secure perimeter stopped a suspicious man wearing a ski mask blocks away from Fiserv Forum. I’m told he had a AK47 pistol, a full magazine, & a Scream mask in a large backpack he was carrying. Milwaukee PD arrested him. Unknown what his plans or intentions were. They are scanning you on the street for any weapons.

A video of Trump’s call with RFK Jr. was leaked – Trump talks about vaccines, tells RFK Jr. doing something with him would be “big.” RFK’s son posted it. In it Trump mentions Biden asked Trump why he turned his head.

WP install page came up again. Tried on a Tor and had this: “Not Acceptable. An appropriate representation of the requested resource /blog/news-briefs-07-17-2024/ could not be found on this server.” Which is different.

It can be caused by the WP backend being so overloaded that by the time it presents content to nginx (usually the culprit) or to whatever other Web server is flaking out (with lighttpd being a close second), the content is considered malformed.

So AC may need to look into some tuning to slow down the Web server’s need to return pages quickly so WP has more time to present the content to it.

Within nginx it’s possible to do such a thing on the server side with an echo module.

https://serverfault.com/questions/537134/how-do-i-tell-nginx-to-wait-a-number-of-seconds-before-serving-an-asset

Even a single second delay might be enough to give WP enough time to generate the content so that the HTTP 406 errors don’t keep showing up.

Potentially error prone, of course, and so worth testing elsewhere, even if you have to spin up your blog within a VM on your laptop. (Which might be a good idea anyway in preparation for a static page with an external comment add-on.)

Within lighttpd, there’s a parameter you can set.

https://superuser.com/questions/1445522/lighttpd-and-slow-pages

These things assume that you have enough access to your Web server environment in addition to WP that you can tune these things.

One last bit: WP typically runs out of FastCGI and there’s a tuning infrastructure for it.

Way too involved to describe in a short reply, but if it comes to that, know it exists and it’s documented.

Highly recommended not to cut/paste stuff from nginx and PHP example kinds of sites because the probability of breaking your config is rather high, plus if a caching module gets involved (or 2+ of them), it’s a major pain in the backside to debug.

But you can find some stuff that may be integrated fairly easily that would relieve some of the symptoms.

The 403 error: probably some “htaccess” stuff going on not with .htaccess files, but with server directives.

There’s probably a spot in your Web provider’s admin panel to set up additional directories for public access.

By default (rightly), they assume directories you don’t make public are for private file storage as may be used for CDN-type CGI scripts.

BTW, this HTTP 406 problem is really aggressive at this point, it shows up within seconds after getting a comment through.

OK OK, one more. 🙂

I don’t deal with Simply Static, but there’s a problem with identifying changed content on a Web host where if you’re trying to pull pages for update from one, it gets tricky.

There’s a file we need that’s on a Git type of source code control server where the Web copy we can access does not get presented with a last modified timestamp.

Instead, there’s an ETag field that we have to track for it, and so we store a copy of the ETag from the headers along with a copy of the data so that we know when we need to pull it again for a data table rebuild.

As for the data, it doesn’t give many clues about its update time, and so there’s little to grab hold of there either.

So the issue with Simply Static may be that it tries to look at the WP site on your Web server, doesn’t get what it likes in terms of modification dates, doesn’t like using ETag and caching that, and because some content’s getting regenerated for every page on a new fetch (and updating ETag along with it), Simply Static decides to do the same.

But if you have a way of feeding a specific set of files to Simply Static and you have the local modification times to go by, you could have your update script sweep up everything that’s been touched in the past two weeks every time, just so you’re sure that you get everything during an overlapping run.

It’s a systems theoretical functional decomposition problem almost every time, in other words, and that’s how some people are really great at debugging things.

Good luck with this ball of mud. 🙂

While I know what you mean in all the above, AC doesn’t. And that’s the problem here. Instead, it’s easier to believe it’s intentional outsider rather than the nature of bad code/config. WP is hot garbage, and everyone uses it anyway.

They constantly bugfix WP. There is a new version already. But even then, WP is just bug ridden(IMHO).
as I said, it’s resource related. You trigger a usage limit, and it starts. Once the limit is reached, it’s not like it zeros out on reset.
Your hosting provider is providing a set amount of resources. ANY overage, not merely quantity, but quantity over time, causes a failure of the db connection.
Again, not saying it’s ONLY badcode/limited resources, but that’s the likely cause of 95% of the visible issues.
I’m not a WP expert, and the CMS I did specialize in, I walked away from when it went woke, so I’m not offering to help, merely saying find someone who can. This is not unsolvable, but it’s beyond your skills and the hosting/techsupport you have is part of your issue.

AC, you are correct- It’s not just bad code, as scruffy suggests. Your site is indeed being hit by variations of ddos attacks. Your comments in the past of spikes in traffic, random intervals, etc alone make that clear. Static content will help, but only if your site is hosted by a cdn that implements ddos protections.

I’m not necessarily suggesting cloudflare, but they do provide good documentation for your edification: https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/ddos/how-to-prevent-ddos-attacks/

Good luck, AC. You are under attack for a reason.

DO NOT, cloudflare is a control freak site, got Jim Stone and he warned everybody how they would divert or block sites, meant to become the “trusted” ones and jam you at just the wrong time, backstabbers. About as trustworthy as crowdstrike.

ABC, anybody but cloudflare.

Germany to halve military aid for Ukraine despite possible Trump White House

RFK Jr’s son RFK III leaked the call between Trump and Junior; that is enough to keep any of the Kennedys away from the White House/presidency.

Bobby III seemed defiant, saying, “I am a firm believer that these sorts of conversations should be had in public. Here’s Trump giving his real opinion to my dad about vaccinating kids — this was the day after the assassination attempt. If I violated some kind of law in posting this my only wish is to have Dr. Anthony Fauci as my cellmate.”

It is almost 8 AM; the hacker has arrived at his post. This has got to be government intel action. If it is WordPress, they need to be sued up the whazoo.

Not sure if it means anything but I had noticed the strange circles on the bottom of the SS’s shoes in the photos when they were dogpiled on Trump, maybe it is some kind of positioning tech they use to know where everyone is in real time and the protectee has to wear them too? If so, why they would want them off of Trump in that moment, I’m not sure. ?

Look again: There were also several more (different?) shoes left on the stage .. not sure who else lost their footwear in the commotion .. or why?

No, it’s just a pretty standard pattern for rubber-soled dress shoes.
https://www.samuel-windsor.co.uk/products/oxford-shoe-rubber-sole-black
I’m certain USSS required rubber soled shoes on everyone, including the protectee.

Yeah, either this b team of pick up players agents are just scatter assed and not team action rehersed and his shoes, probably loafer high end dress shoes came off inadvertently and they just went into praetorian guard mode and policed everything loose up while they get Trump’s big self packaged up in some manner and move out to their evac contingency plans. There may be airtags trackers in the shoes, which every one will be wearing, instead of a device on person or in their gear kits. Like blue force trackers for military units but for the agents and principle top v.i.p. persons, command centers can then map a game board of friendlies, adjust tactics for conditions etc. Maybe an agent thought outside the box and took them off and away thinking insider actions internally to go dark on that tech for escape and evasion as their next possible actions. That is if this .fed agency is actually pro and squared away. Doubtful though.

But, but, they re safeguarding ‘Our Democracy’ from mustached man! Right?

Vox Day: Free Press in the “Democracies”

A decision by the German government to ban a “right-wing extremist” magazine may be linked to an interview it conducted with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, she has suggested.

She made the claim on Tuesday, hours after the crackdown on Compact magazine was announced by Berlin. The move also affected associated companies and individuals. The 80-minute interview with Zakharova was published last Saturday.

And Vox gives a quick jab of irony:

It’s certainly going to be amusing to hear the screams when media institutions start being banned and the properties of leading contributors, managers, and main shareholders are targeted by governments around the world because someone interviewed an Israeli government employee or a US corporate executive.

For all those who believe using power is akin to putting on the One Ring. Remember that in the same story. The One Ring was destroyed.

It’s not refusing to use power only to have it used against you anyway. And you becoming extinct.

Perspective illusion. The Beast is parked at a 45 degree angle to the camera, so he’s pointing/muzzling over he hood of the Beast, not Trump. (Had to look at longer clips to orient.)

I’d believe that. Your average Liberal Arts grad SS agent would probably have no idea what a rangefinder was for, or what one would look like.

That’s one of the more WTF! aspects of the whole thing. Most aspects of the murder attempt are easily explained by “it was a setup, and the SS was part of it.” But the shoes thing… whaaat?

I was sort of hoping the SS would come up with some fantabulous story as to why they did that, but it looks like they’re going to play the STFU card on that one.
