If you’re in a bad situation, “de-escalation” is rarely appropriate. Removing the threat in the fastest, safest way is the correct response. Playing like you’re in an MMA match is a really good way to get hurt or killed. Your opponent has already demonstrated he’s not playing by the rules, or you wouldn’t be in the situation to start with. You have no idea what he can pull out of his sleeve, anything from some martial arts trick you’ve never come across and have no defense for, to half a dozen bullets from the gun he had tucked where you didn’t notice it.

I was talking about my mother, and that other woman. These are women who were raised in a conservative religious environment. They wanted an early marriage and they wanted children. My mother managed to have children. I don’t know that the other woman did not go on to a happy life. Odds are against it.

I have lived in leftist cities. The women, in general, do not want children. Some of these women want to be cosseted toys for millionaires. They are okay with disturbing sexual practices. I know one woman who is friends with a whole group of these women. They are fit, single, mercenary. They are not sweet, though. Or, they have aged out of their prime. They don’t think they are aged out, even in their later years. They are open about wanting arrangements. The woman I know is open to unusual, provided the man has money. She’s presentable. She, and these other women, put a lot of effort into being fit, well made up, expensively dressed, well spoken.

I’m wondering, is there some extra level of evil that comes from corrupting genuinely good women, rather than sticking to their own kind of covetous, faithless, and sterile? The religious women are offered things – that they eventually walked away from. They talk about feeling empty and despairing. The covet-types are genuinely happy to be bought off with designer purses.

I think the reason you wrote this might be that you really didn’t have a normal childhood and adolescence. In my high school there were occasional fights between boys, over some girl or insult (real or perceived). Most of us carried knives. No one ever pulled a knife on anyone else in a fight. Know one ever grabbed an improvised club or other such weapon at hand. No one ever gouged out someone’s eye or bit off someone’s finger or ear or tried to break someone’s knee or elbow. They were NOT play fights. They were serious nose breaking, rib cracking punches thrown. But at the same time they were NOT 100% an effort to ‘neutralize the threat’ and if someone had treated it that way and grabbed a baseball bat or pulled a knife then it would have been viewed as not only incredibly dishonorable, but even his own friends would have immediately stepped in to restrain him. These fights were exactly a ‘middle ground’ of what the teachers and coaches would have referred to as ‘boys being boys’: they were jostling for dominance WITHIN the pack. And just like any other social and cooperative predators while it is okay to compete violently for your place in the pecking order you don’t want to cripple or kill one of your fellows that you may need later. That guy who punched you in the mouth this year for flirting with the girl he liked might next year be taking a beating blocking for you on the football field next year. ‘Fighting dirty’ might win you the fight but you would get contempt instead of respect.
I have observed the same thing amount grown men who work as oilfield roustabouts but are really kids at heart. They might get drunk and pick a fistfight in a parking lot over money owed or a perceived slight or a woman or shirking some duty at work that made others job harder or more dangerous… but never draw or grab a weapon or attempt a move that would leave the other man crippled or dead (unless by dumb accident). And the next month those same two men would be trusting each other with their lives handling pipe.
This case does not appear to be such a middle ground between black and white, but clearly in the real world among real people there is a grey middle ground of violence done as a contest between community members but not a life and death struggle between feuding clans. The last time I fought like that was middle school but I do know what it feels like in such fights and I’d have been beaten before I’d picked up a rock to hit the guy with and I had zero fear that if I went down he would continue to beat me.
