Massive Mortality Is Not Impossible

In February and March of 2015, former senior national security officials of the Reagan and Clinton administrations warned that North Korea should be regarded as capable of delivering by satellite a small nuclear warhead, specially designed to make a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against the United States. According to the Congressional EMP Commission, a single warhead delivered by North Korean satellite could blackout the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year—killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and societal collapse.

It wouldn’t take that. I remember in my travels happening on some survivalist site, where the members were talking about how they had stockpiled 5 gallon buckets. At the first sign of the economic collapse, they were going to load their pickups with the buckets, and drive along the power lines. Every time they saw a transformer, they were going to stop, shoot into the bottom of it, and then position a 5 gallon bucket to catch the draining mineral oil. Then they would move on. After exhausting their buckets, they would retrace their route, picking up the now full buckets, and gathering several hundred gallons of mineral oil.

Among them, the attitude was that once the collapse happened, nothing else was going to be made, so it was going to be a giant race to scavenge as much stuff as they could for sale or barter later. They all seemed awed by how brilliant their plan was. I suppose once the transformers are gone, there will be no reason to not rig a motorized spool to the bed of your pick-up, thread one end of a power line to it, and peel off down the highway spooling up the copper wire right off the poles, for sale.

When the collapse hits, there will be high amygdala, and a large segment of the population will be doing crazy shit. As that crazy shit leads to mortality, that will amp up the amygdalae of everyone, and the crazy shit will only increase. If the power goes down in any large measure, and we begin to head to the 90% mortality in a year we keep hearing about, anything will be possible.

I remember the amygdala everyone was hit by on September 11th. That was a mere 3,000 deaths, with a very small probability of any further mortality directly visiting any regular citizen. Imagine what it would be like if there were 270 million dead, and a 90% chance of mortality visiting any specific person, due to all the crazies who are breaking down in the face of the Apocalypse.

Anything would be possible.
