Horrific Acts And Amygdala Distraction

I was surfing the net when I saw this story:

In a stunning development in Muslim-majority Pakistan, a court has sentenced to death five extremist Muslims fo the murder of a Christian husband and wife who were burned to ashes in a kiln.

The report comes from the American Center for Law and Justice, which has been fighting the nation’s draconian penalties for blaspheming Muhammad or desecrating the Quran.

The penalties often are applied irrespective of innocence.

In this case, Shahzad and his wife Shama were accused of desecrating Quranic text.

Then I happened on this image over at BareNakedIslam, of guys about to be incinerated alive:

It is a peculiar thing to contemplate. Who are these creatures who throw a couple of innocent people into a wood-fired kiln, and watch with excitement as they burn to death? Who are the people who get such satisfaction from tying up other people and setting them on fire?

This can only be understood through understanding amygdala. These are creatures who are conditioned to be miserable, from childhood. The misery in their lives is overwhelming, and their amygdala, left to its own devices, tortures them constantly. The reason they torture is that it distracts their amygdala, focusing it on something external, and that relieves their agony with a slightly stimulating sensation.

To understand the misery which is their lives, you have to view the sensations their acts trigger in us, as we observe them, and imagine that sensation being relieving, compared to what you normally feel. They don’t call it the demons that drive them for nothing, or portray the motivation the demons provide as torture.

Just as with narcissists, these are not happy, ebullient people deriving pleasure from inflicting pain. They are weak and cowardly losers, seeking a moment’s respite from their agony – and so overwhelming is their agony that the only stimulus overpowering enough to distract from it, are the horrifying images that we see them release.
