Facebook is under fire for asking users whether pedophiles should be able to proposition underage girls for sexually explicit photographs on the giant social network.
The survey is the latest in a series of missteps by the Silicon Valley company, which has been criticized for allowing content that exploits children.
From violence on its Live streaming service to hate speech to divisive messages sent by Russian operatives trying to to meddle in the U.S. presidential election, toxic content flowing through its platform has heightened scrutiny of Facebook.
Facebook scrapped the survey that posed questions about teens being groomed by older men after it was spotted by media outlets in the United Kingdom. It now says the survey could have been better “designed.”
Just a little misstep that could have been better designed.
Keep in mind, this was somebody in power at that organization who didn’t see anything wrong with this. It was normal to them. It makes me wonder how much child porn is hosted on facebook servers.
I am beginning to wonder if that r-selected sexualizing of the young is a much more powerful effect than I ever thought possible. Everywhere we look lately, it seems pedophiles are being uncovered and exposed. At the same time, perceptions about sex with underage girls are shifting to become more permissive.
Interestingly, as a social media company, I can’t help but wonder if the increased dopamine they say those companies’ technologies are designed to elicit is r-ifying the company’s entire culture far more than regular society.
I suppose if you think about it, the under-aged girl is kind of the midpoint between grown woman and sex-bot, from an amygdala perspective. The woman is a huge amygdala-stress, because she can reject you, insult you, or even just embarrass you in conversation by pointing out something wrong that you assert. The relative power hierarchy is more stressful, and for those with amygdalae that cannot handle stress, that threat probably dampens desire.

The underaged girl would seem a mid-point, not quite as stressful as the grown woman on equal footing with you, but not quite the stress-free experience of the sexbot. I suppose as we head to the rise of the sex bots, the very presence of that market, at any size, is probably evidence of amygdalae issues that would favor an increase in underaged mating.
