“We often see that [Germany’s] intention is only follow its own goal,” Polish foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski said in an interview with DPA.
“Of course every country has the right to pursue its own interests, but in some circumstances we’d expect a certain level of compromise.”
Merkel is set to arrive in Warsaw on Friday for talks with Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, as well as the heads of state of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
The quartet have had increasingly tense relations with Berlin since Germany took in hundreds of thousands of migrants last year and started pushing for an EU-wide quota system, whereby refugees would be re-distributed across the union.
This is the opposite of the force which drove everyone to abolish their borders. It is amygdalae, beginning to judge standing up and being confrontational as necessary. I am not sure they actually see that such aggression can produce superior outcomes in the future. Rather, I think their amygdalae are just irritated in a way that requires release. But that is how the human machine works. As the world turns from plenty to scarcity, people do this, and it yields superior outcomes in the future by forestalling whatever the irritant was – in this case more migrants and German disregard for the interests of other nations. And yet they may have no idea, on a conscious level, that their decision making apparatus has changed or that it is now adapted to a different environment.
Of course when amygdalae light up there are always those who are ahead of the curve, and representative of where things are trending:
Czech police detain driver for harassing Merkel’s motorcade…
A man in a black Mercedes “attempted to join the motorcade as it moved between Prague airport and Czech government headquarters…”
“While attempting to join the motorcade, he tried to run down police securing the road,” Bocan said, adding that officers had to use firearms to subdue the suspect…
Several hundred protesters, including members of anti-Islam groups, rallied in central Prague against Merkel and her decision to open the EU’s doors to refugees and migrants last summer.
I suspect, given current trends, that Merkel will eventually be pulled from a car by an angry mob, and by the time the mob has gotten big enough and agitated enough to do that, it will go farther than just a mild beating. Amygdalae feed on each other, and once there are enough people at this guy’s level of amygdala-stimulation, there will be no reasoning or logic – just raw amygdala venting.
