A little-noticed bill moving through Congress would allow companies to require employees to undergo genetic testing or risk paying a penalty of thousands of dollars, and would let employers see that genetic and other health information.
Giving employers such power is now prohibited by legislation including the 2008 genetic privacy and nondiscrimination law known as GINA. The new bill gets around that landmark law by stating explicitly that GINA and other protections do not apply when genetic tests are part of a “workplace wellness” program.
Mark my words, those the government wants more intel on will find their companies suddenly deciding to demand DNA. And once that DNA is sent off to a company, the results will wind their way into a file on you somewhere.
Gaining access to your DNA is the ultimate power to have in the Apocalypse. Once they have your DNA, they can not only find you, they could fake DNA test results to frame you. Nobody is going to argue that the DNA test showing they raped a dead girl was planted as part of some massive government conspiracy.
I don’t believe this is a conscious desire now, but clearly government is understanding the power of information, and grasping for all that it can get. When the Apocalypse hits, and the threat of utter destruction causes morals and ideals to give way to raw practicality, don’t be surprised if America looks nothing like what you were taught about growing up.
Already there is considerable divergence. I can’t imagine what things will look like then.
[…] Employers May Be Allowed To Demand Your Genetic Information […]
Agreed. I’m very skeptical of these “test your DNA” ancestry sites and advertisements. It’s a massive DNA collection exercise playing on the ego.
“Nobody is going to argue that the DNA test showing they raped a dead girl was planted as part of some massive government conspiracy.”
Why not? Government claims they found your IP on a kiddiepr0n server? Government claims they found some on the computer they seized ? Claims you said something wrong on the Internet?
Why would anyone in their right mind believe a claim of a government agency? What, you believe you DON’T live in North Korea?
Believe me, nobody knows better than me that all the shit about due process, and freedom, and the government being constrained by the Constitution and legalities is bullshit.
My point was most people are listening to the news, and as far as they know nobody in government does anything without filing all the official paperwork, asking judges for permission, and as far as they know, everything is on the up and up. If it went to court, I would not expect anybody to believe me, based on the amount of propaganda everyone is fed on a daily basis.
