FBI had University researchers crack the ID’s behind who is using TOR:
The team behind the world’s largest anonymous online network is accusing the FBI of paying security researchers at least $1 million to uncover the identities of its users as part of a sweeping criminal investigation.
If true, the payment would represent a concerning collaboration that may be illegal if the FBI didn’t obtain a warrant, according to the Tor Project, which oversees the online anonymity software Tor…
“We think it’s unlikely they could have gotten a valid warrant for CMU’s attack as conducted, since it was not narrowly tailored to target criminals or criminal activity, but instead appears to have indiscriminately targeted many users at once,” he added.
Law enforcement breaking the law on off-the-books intel ops has apparently become a new normal, which doesn’t bode well for societal stability in the long term.
When you run an illegal intel op on US soil, you don’t approach a researcher cold about doing an illegality for you on the side, and hope he keeps his mouth shut if he says no – especially if you are the FBI, and the media fallout from it would be epic. Illegal operations require a special approach, where you cover all potential avenues of exposure before they can become problematic.
First you covertly drop the full weight of the surveillance behemoth on everyone who will know anything long before anyone is brought into the loop, you learn everything about them, and you find their pressure points. Does the head of the lab have a nephew he loves who has a smack problem? Jam him up and then make dropping charges contingent on full subservience. Now you own the head of the lab. Does researcher #3 have a hot affair going with a grad student? No? Then matriculate a young female from your agency into a position under him and have her bang him – and document it. Does researcher #5 have anything that can be used to compromise him? No? Then tell the lab director to move him out for some reason. Pretty soon you can control the entire lab, and now you can approach them about doing that illegal research project for you, though you will still run the money through a nameless Delaware corporation – or some other entity you own from some other operation.
This sounds extreme, but when you are using governmental authority to break laws, and your very job depends on not being caught breaking laws, it is literally the only way you can do it. I do not know how often they are doing this, but from media reports, it sounds like it is becoming more common.
It is a great tool to have around in LE – so long as it is manned by honest guys who want to destroy evil, and who don’t want to bring the misery to innocent people who aren’t breaking the law.
But if Valerie Jarrett takes over at the White House, and she decides to wreck the lives of any evil capitalists who oppose the socialization of America by posting comments to Free Republic or the Conservative Tree House, all bets are off. All of a sudden her people are installed in the super-secret surveillance/intelligence unit’s leadership positions, and now it is basically like the mafia. You pay money to the government to fund their illegal activities, they break the law however they want, and if anybody complains they get knocked down with illegality until they don’t complain anymore.
The only difference is, if you complain to the local police about the mob, they will take it down for you and uphold the rule of law. But if anybody complains about the surveillance state, the cops will have to report them for dissidence to the FBI, and maybe even endure surveillance themselves to be sure they keep their mouths shut about the report they took. Then the complainer gets even more to complain about.
It is a real mess, which appears to have gone so far, that now they will need to break the law ever more to keep it all under wraps. Hopefully there won’t end up being too high a body count before all is said and done, but if high body counts are going to happen, this is how it starts to snowball toward that.
Have no doubt – if this happened, every researcher at that lab who knew anything is under 24/7 coverage right now, neighbors have been bought out of their houses so new neighbors could turn them into listening and observation posts to watch and listen to what they do in their homes, listening devices are in their offices, phone and internet are monitored, and they are tracked to make sure they don’t have any unauthorized contact with the media. Don’t think the guys behind this will fiddle-fuck around and half-ass something as big as warrantless surveillance on innocent Americans, or the super-secret database where all the files on every American target go, that it was all fed into.
I’d bet in the next fifty years, a lot of interesting things will come out. I just don’t see how it can become this prolific in this nation, and not eventually run into problems. What will come out will be a huge scandal.
The problem is just too much government.
The solution is apocalypse, and it is coming.
