Deadly Yellow Fever virus on brink of spreading to Europe and Americas, charity warns
Virus leads to bleeding from eyes, nose and mouth and organ failure, and is sweeping across Africa in worst outbreak for more than 30 years.
A dozen cases have already been reported in China, and Save the Children says vaccine stocks are too low to cope with a global outbreak.
Already jumped to China. Looks like tightening economic ties with Africa to gain access to cheap oil could backfire. When the apocalypse hits, you will not want a large share of your population commuting to and from Africa.
It won’t be the big one, because there is a vaccine. But it is indicative of how a case of the sniffles one day can be the next Black Death tomorrow. I do wonder if there is already a reduction in trickle-down wealth in Africa, leaving some mildly immuno-compromised, and eating things they normally wouldn’t.
Still, vaccines are running short now, which will be the new normal in the Apocalypse:
A deadly yellow fever epidemic that has afflicted southern and central Africa this year could soon spread worldwide, exacerbated by a severe vaccine shortage, the charity Save the Children warned on Tuesday.
The organization issued the warning a day before the beginning of a mass vaccination campaign it is helping to administer in the Democratic Republic of Congo, starting with the capital, Kinshasa, where about 10 million people are at risk.
Because of the vaccine shortage, just seven million emergency doses are available for the campaign, Save the Children said in its statement: “too few to even fully cover Kinshasa, let alone the whole of the D.R.C.”
As an emergency measure, on the advice of the World Health Organization, the doses will be severely diluted to treat five people instead of one, Save the Children said. The diluted doses provide a stopgap immunity of about one year, as opposed to lifetime immunity from a full dose.
With the free resources today, more vaccines will be turned out shortly. But in the Apocalypse, no vaccines equals lots of dead poor people, because there will always be some vaccines somewhere to be purchased, if there is a demand. You can tell people to give up a few hundred dollars here and there – you can’t expect to tell them to die without eliciting serious consequences.
Once K-selection hits, it really will be survival of the fittest. Until then, the degeneration of the human race continues apace.
