Bernstein said one of the big difference between Watergate and now is “that we are in the midst of a cold civil war in this country.”
He expanded on that idea, saying that there is a political and cultural civil war and all of our reporting is taking place in the context of that cold civil war. And nothing quite like that existed at the time of Watergate.”
Part of the “cold civil war,” Berstein added, can be pinned on the “configuration of media with Fox News, with CNN being perceived by different sets of viewers as representing different truths.” Singling out Fox News, he said the right-leaning cable news channel has “changed American politics as perhaps no other institution has.”
Because of the massive tsunami of dopamine, ease, and safety we have enjoyed courtesy of the national debt, r-strategists have so diverged from the K-selected standard of our species that the two increasingly cannot get along. There is no path back, other than seeing the r-strategists either removed in conflict or K-ified, and K-ification will only happen with an epic level of totally unavoidable misery foisted on them for an extended period, to develop amygdala-tolerance for adversity.
The Watergate period was similar, in that they had just enjoyed the wealth and pleasure of the post-war boom. Adding to that, the 20-somethings of the sixties were conceived during WWII, when most K-strategists were overseas fighting. So they were probably high carriers of long form DRD4 genes, and predisposed to the r-strategy. Add in the pleasure, ease and wealth, and you have a bloom of ultra-r-strategists.
These civil-war periods occur not because K becomes extreme. K-strategists today are actually quite r-tolerant compared to K-strategists of the stable, unified, 1950’s. Civil war periods arise because the r-strategists go so far r that they cannot tolerate any K.
These times are different than Watergate though, for two different reasons. One, during Watergate the liberals controlled the entire discussion. They owned all the media, and what right-wing media there was consisted of Cuckservative central’s newsletter, National Review, busily attacking the John Birch Society as dangerous and extremist which pushed things leftward. Even if you were able to discern the truth, being constantly bombarded by lies, even by “your own side” would have been incredibly demoralizing to the right.
Today, with the internet allowing the silent majority a voice, and master persuader Donald Trump leading the charge, the left-wing media hasn’t got a chance. Fox News is almost an after thought, as the Clinton years showed. This is all-Pepe and the centipedes, led by the Donald.
The second difference is that back in the late sixties, I don’t think everyone had this apocalyptic sense we have today. Everybody is detecting the coming Apocalypse, like animals heading for high ground right before a tsunami hits. Given the extent of that K-stimulus, there will be no stopping the progression to in-grouping, out-grouping, and then full on K-selection. During Watergate, there was a gradual downturn which ultimately bloomed under Jimmmy Carter (and which turned things more toward K for Reagan), but that was a normal minor down turn. Nobody thought the US was destined to go bankrupt, and maybe dissolve, Soviet-style. Today is different.
The post-Watergate downturn should have continued for four or five years into Reagan’s term, been followed by a minor boom, and then produced at least one more minor down turn between then and now, and probably two or three. Instead Reagan tapped the national debt to provide essentially free resources, brought the normal downturn to an end using future debt, and ever since we have been staving off downturns at the expense of our future using national debt, with a little support here and there from bubbles and irrational exuberance produced by the r-selected free resources.
I think everyone knows that we have mortgaged the future to buy ease in the present for too long, and when the big one hits, it will be all of the misery that we avoided over the last four decades, added together at once, plus interest, with hostile foreigners, local Muslim terrorists, and heavily armed criminal savages adding to the fun.
Expect this cold war to go hot, in one form or another, and expect it to do it throughout the entire world, all at once.
We really have an incredible time to be alive, coming down the road. Mankind may never have seen history this amazing unfold before him, nor has he had the actual biological forces driving it laid out before him in the form of r/K Selection Theory.
Spread r/K Theory, because there is no easy way out of this situation for the rabbits
[…] Bernstein Says There Is A Cold Civil War […]
I remember the 1960s. I am just old enough to recall the Cuban Missile Crisis (I am not American: your experience might have been more intense).
For most of that period we were all conscious of the threat of nuclear war. No high ground to head for if that happened.
We got used to it, and the thought simply hovered at the back of our minds while we kept calm and carried on. We Brits had some practice in that.
Now is different. The Apocalypse looks not only likely, but it will be as complex as you describe. And bloody terrifying, here in Europe and there in the USA.
Now I live in Italy. We are not so colonised as Britain, Germany, France and Sweden, so when we get going the colonists are gone. Elsewhere it will be harder, but at least we know where to find them.
The economic Apocalypse is a another matter, akin to the Bomb.
How can we be sure that K tolerance of r isn’t some sort of r psychology at play? Western societies seem to have very few super K-type individuals. Many seem unwilling or tolerant K’s who have dopamine addled amygdala’s as well, but don’t carry the long form DRD4. This attitude of tolerance, of everything, will lead to a level of violence and destruction so appalling and complete that complex civil societies might not be possible in the lands formerly occupied by Western Men. It is not long before the demographics ensures this outcome. Tolerance of everything, muslims, liberals, marxist education, trannies, women casually dating and not raising children, the welfare state, ethnic mixing and its encouragement, government corruption, stronger rivals, foreign faces in governance, female suffrage, loss of religion. Men used to challenge each other to duels, leaders of armies, noblemen, used to engage each other in personal combat before battles. Tolerance isn’t a sign of strength, its a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that the ease and comfort of the status quo is preferable to conflict. Tolerance is dopamine fueled. Conflict isn’t.
Way back I knew guys who I believe were ultra-K. They were Korean War vets, and hardcore, and they had a harshness and coldness about them that they seemed completely comfortable with, even as it set me as a teen on edge. I liked them, they were loyal to me, but I could feel there was a difference between us, and if things were do or die, I would have a weakness that they would have completely not lacked at all. I would feel sorry for people they would take out, and I would probably hesitate in gray areas were they wouldn’t pause.
We are almost all somewhat soft, but I assume it will be eradicated when it needs to be quickly. We are designed to adapt ahead of time, and truth be told, I am already different than I was just a little bit back. And I’m not heading r.
Bernstein is a despicable little twit. Just go die, you idiot.
