Autonomous Vehicles To Hit The Road

Here they come:

How difficult is it to test autonomous vehicles (AVs) on public roads? Uber can probably tell you all about it. Much of the difficulty in obtaining the permits necessary for such tests comes from fear. Because self-driving technology is new, because the systems have been involved in incidents in the past, and so on, people aren’t quite ready to trust the tech.

The governor of Washington state, however, has a different perspective. Governor Jay Inslee signed an order on Wednesday that would allow for autonomous vehicle tests without a human driver behind the wheel. According to the governor’s official blog, the order could allow these tests to begin within the next two months. Self-driving system developers can already apply for permits for pilot program tests through the state’s Department of Licensing.

So the new thing will be autonomous vehicles. Or as I like to call them, civilian-maintained, remote-controlled government hunter-killer units, designed to be hijacked over a wireless network to run down all opponents of the state, using the very cameras they use to navigate.

I doubt the bandwidth is there now, but once it is, imagine what these will allow. Every car with cameras pointing in all four directions, connected to a computer and wireless network as it drives around.

Did you think it was cool when Will Smith was running from the government in Enemy of the State, and one of the techs re-tasked a Keyhole satellite on the fly to look down on him from above in real time?

One day they will be able to press a button, and enter into what will essentially be a Google Street view, only updated live and in three dimensions. Instead of a satellite view from above, it will be like they are playing Grand Theft Auto.

The future will be in rural real estate, far away from everyone else at some point.

Tell everyone about r/K Theory, because there are a lot of K-stimuli out there

Wrap copper foil (Faraday cage) around the cars computer and antennas. Downside would be no radio. A reliable AV would have little need to communicate with outside world, other than optics. If federal regs insist otherwise then AVs are not reliable, don’t buy. Of course people may not be allowed to own an AV, only rent. Also crash data will be kept secret. We wanted the World of tomorrow, we will get Oceania.

Sounds like you’re describing the Trolley accidents to occur in the 21st century.
