Autonomous Killer Robots Are Coming

The military is already planning:

In a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday, Gen. Paul Selva responded to a question from Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) about a Defense Department directive that requires a human operator to be involved in the decision-making process when it comes to taking lives with autonomous weapons systems.

Selva warned lawmakers that the military should keep “the ethical rules of war in place lest we unleash on humanity a set of robots that we don’t know how to control.”

“I don’t think it’s reasonable for us to put robots in charge of whether or not we take a human life,” Selva told the committee. Peters mentioned that the directive expires later this year and told Selva that America’s enemies would not hesitate to use such technology.

“Our adversaries often do not consider the same moral and ethical issues that we consider each and every day,” Peters told Selva.

Selvar responded, saying that America does and should always “take our values to war.”

Like all technology, we will make them first, and then the Chinese knockoffs will show up and they will probably be ‘set and forget.’

I view autonomous killer robots as the ultimate rabbit dream. Imagine if the rabbits could program killer robots to perform the function of the hawks in rabbit ecology. If rabbits are importing the Muslim hordes in the hopes they will kill native k-strategists and fill the role of constant mortality in r-selection, imagine what they will do with the autonomous killer robots, when the time comes.

I predict we will have real life “Robocop” accidents happen, with autonomous killer bots going on rampages as rabbits scramble for their lives, and the leftist rabbit programmers will claim it was all a horrible accident.

Tell everyone about r/K Theory, because you want them to know the robot the leftist programmed to kill them wasn’t an accident

Russia already beat the US to the autonomous stage. All of their robots don’t need human orders to kill, they just kill.

Although, when you think about it, Russia builds war robots while the West is building sex robots. Definite difference in priorities.

I suspect one of the reasons r strategists hate K strategists is because on a gut level the r’s knows they need the K’s and can’t survive without them. The r strategists produce nothing and without the K strategists would starve to death.

My main concern with these robots is the potential for them to be compromised. Ideally, these machines would use as few wireless communications protocols as possible, would have their communications and data exchange functions written in memory-safe languages, and would use hardened, formally verified microkernels compiled with memory-safety features. This would make compromising them virtually impossible.

Whether or not that is the case, I can’t say. For all we know, the robotic hunter killers of the future could be running Windows 10 and use a plain old HTTP server to communicate (given the military’s propensity to use COTS components to cut costs, it’s possible they might). I only hope the people in charge of those military projects have their heads screwed on right.

The military probably has EMP grenades, if not in the works, more than likely to be deployed in tandem–not everyone in the military is moronic enough to let loose this kind of technology without a defense.

“Project Insight” style semi-autonomous weapons… can be targeted in any direction.

Huh, Gen Selva was my commander two different times. I didn’t even know he was the vice CJCS. Doesn’t surprise me too much as he was always on a rocket sled career path. He’s an ambitious dude, that’s for sure.

Not that anybody cares. 🙂

I imagine the first deployment of US deathbots will be in service of some “humanitarian” mission in Somalia or some other remote African locale. With Predator overwatch support, deathbots could be dropped into a village about to receive food aid. The orders could be as simple as disable any and all vehicles approaching from X direction in grid Y/z. Several cock-ups could be suppressed before releasing vid of wonderful bots working to save humanity.
