Austria To Send Army To The Border, To Keep Migrants In Italy

Austria will “very soon” impose border checks and deploy soldiers on its frontier with Italy if the influx of migrants across the Mediterranean does not slow, Vienna’s defence minister was quoted as saying.

“I expect that very soon border controls will be activated and that an assistance deployment (by the military) will be requested,” Hans Peter Doskozil told the online edition of the Krone daily on Monday.

He was cited as saying that this move was “indispensable if the inflow into Italy does not ease”. The paper said that 750 soldiers were available and that four armoured vehicles had already been sent to the area over the weekend.

Austria introduced checks on its eastern border with Hungary in 2015 and has readied physical measures such as barriers on its Italian border in the south-west, including at the famous Brenner Pass.

Now the hardships of the migrants are becoming so great that nations are taking measures to protect themselves from them, and in the process they are foisting migrant hardships on other nations. Seeing other nations screw them will begin to imbue a sense that everything is a competition between nations, and out-groups will screw you if they can.

That cognitive pattern will then begin being applied to other areas. Greeks will see the competition when Brussels and Berlin try to tell them to tighten their belt more. Italians will see the competition when Switzerland taxes goods crossing their border. Germany will see the competition when other countries begin ignoring their dictates and sending their migrants to them. And that will all further exercise those pathways, causing them to begin to be expressed everywhere. In truth, were it not for the need to expel the migrants and overthrow local governments, I would have bet on another World War.
