A commenter noted his nasolabial line, and I thought this young image was a particularly interesting photo:
Notice the curved nasolabial lines around the upper lip area, almost like Wanda Sykes:
It is attenuated because he is young. With years of flexion, those lines would have become quite pronounced.
That is a disgust affect, best visualized like the face you would make when recoiling while smelling a very bad smell. I operate with an assumption it indicates some unusual aspect of amygdala function, often correlating with an aberrant sexual taste, oddly enough. It may be an outward measure of an amygdala response to sexual molestation in many cases, and I do note it seems common in homosexuality, though exclusive to it.
Notice also the thin upper lip, curled under against his teeth. That is an expression of anger, also a sign of amygdala dysfunction, though a different type than the disgust affect. Note that Wanda doesn’t have the thin upper lip. Her’s curls in the opposite direction, exposing itself, and it gives their lower faces a different feel. Here is actor Hugh Jackman simulating rage, look at the upper lip:
He makes me wonder if that disgust affect is related to constraint, both sexual and elsewhere. Disgust (which research indicates plays a role in morality) may constrain you when it shocks your brain in the course of the action you are about to undertake. When disgust is constantly turned on in the brain, all the time, the brain may grow desensitized to its shock and it loses that ability to constrain. The deviation in constraint mixed with anger, might produce a propensity for unconstrained anger, perhaps even mingling it with the sexual urge. It will be interesting if investigators find some sort of violent/sadist porn on his computers.
When I look at his face, I naturally begin focusing on the eyes and cheeks, and there he is a blank cypher. But when I focus on the mouth and nasolabial lines, I see something which makes me feel unease, as if he isn’t really smiling, and that feel increases as I close focus just on that upper lip, relaxed and curled under, and ever so slightly in a “V” shape. It just isn’t a “smiling” upper lip, and the more I look at it, the more I feel an almost evil feeling. In contrast, the way Wanda’s upper lip curls outward and exposes itself just feels more like an honest smile, even though the smile is curling downward as her chin flexes, adding to the disgust affect of her nasolabial lines. Here is another girl smiling, to look at the relaxed, outwardly curled upper lip:
Look back and forth between the two upper lips, trying to feel each, and more importantly, feel the contrast between them.
It is subtle but noticing these things can give you a starting point when making snap judgments of people you just met. They aren’t 100 percent accurate. You will always find people who due to physical structure, or just idiosyncrasy violate the rules. But they can form a good starting point, and more importantly today, make you suspicious of a large number of people you meet.

That girl on the bottom, she strikes me as very annoying. This bunching up of her nose irritates me. I wonder why.
I take things literally and I swear I have no idea if the man that wrote this article is joking. How sad… for me!
Something I’ve noticed about my own face this spring is that I have a visible nasolabial line during the couple of weeks when pollen is high and I take Claritin and blow my nose a lot, but not the rest of the year. Do the facial muscles do a lot of the same things to prevent the nose running as they would to avoid smelling a disgusting odor?
I don’t know, but the burning sensation of encountering an immunogenic pollen might produce a similar reflex as encountering an unpleasant smell. Both would sort of crinkle up the nose in a similar fashion.
Wonder if race makes a difference? You point out that Sykes’ upper lip is everted — but MOST black people’s upper (and lower) lips are naturally everted as against White people’s lips. (Haven’t looked at Asians or other racial groups… Just a notice in passing.
