I find “the system” fascinating. Viewing it from the perspective of biology, I see a lot of forces similar to the rules which govern the interactions of the molecular building blocks in nature. There are powerful people, and weak people and there are interactions they would predictably have as they compete for resources. There is greed, and desire for power driving behavior. There are relationships that can amplify power, and synergize wealth accrual. There are machines that can be organized to gain advantage, and power structures that can be corrupted for personal gain.
On top of it all, the entire system exists under Darwinian rules. Those elements which aggregate most effectively and gather the most money and power, form the most beneficial relationships, corrupt the power structures most effectively, and so on will inevitably out-perform those which do not, and in so doing, supplant them. Just as life arose into a semi-predictable form from the soup of molecules, so too should conspiracies of powerful people who most effectively game the system, arise from the chaos of human interaction.
What I do not see is a mechanism by which pedophiles or moral degenerates should out-perform disciplined warriors, to rise to the top of the hierarchy naturally. The only mechanism by which I could see that happening, is if there is a higher level of leadership, who uses pedophiles and moral degenerates as their pawns – the public face of their machine, due to the ease with which they could be controlled. In that case, I could see how those structures could out-perform less paranoid and private structures, whose leaders are publicly known – and more easily targeted.
When I keep seeing stories like this, of characters who should be culled in a state of nature who nevertheless operate supposedly at the pinnacles of power, I have to wonder.
