K-strategists have profound weaknesses, as exemplified in this piece:
Kleynen admitted to police that he planned and staged his own kidnapping with Auston for the purpose of deceiving and robbing the victim.
The victim will not be charged with any crime as detectives have determined he acted in self-defense.
Kleynen is being held at the Henderson Detention Center on charges that include conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery with a deadly weapon and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon.
The victim, who manages the jewellery store, was tricked into complying with the kidnappers’ demands so as to save his “friend” Kleynen.
Loyalty, honor, chivalry, principle – all are inherent to the K-strategy. When part of a group, they are strengths that make the group unbeatable. But they can be used against you. The vulnerable looking girl by the side of a broken down car may be bait for the five guys hiding behind the car. The friend who needs a favor may be the setup for the attack. The unmarked car with police lights trying to pull you over may be the robbery team.
A lot of warriors spend all of their time on the techniques of defense and violence. But the smart criminals will be focused on a totally different plane. They will be looking to find ways to make you render yourself helpless, using your own warrior psychology against you, so they don’t have to go toe to toe with you. In preparing for self defense, perhaps most important of all is to train yourself to first view the world with paranoia and skepticism.
It is difficult to prepare for this, beyond being placed in a position where for a few years everyone you cross paths with is trying to deceive you. It requires a level of paranoia which in r-selected times is probably highly maladaptive, but which becomes all that is left as K-selection enters the arena.
The best advice you can get is to keep your eyes open as the Apocalypse hits, and watch how fast many people end up being totally out for themselves. You may even get burned a few times, as this individual was. For now, look to what you would be if you survived such incidents, and imagine how you would view the world.
Sometimes, nothing around you is what is seems. Those who survive will recognize that on a very deep level, because when the Apocalypse comes, the most dangerous evil will be that which tries to approach you while masked as good.
The “defense” against this will be multi fold. One aspect will be to shrink the individual K’s ‘in group’ to very small. Don’t expect that girl to get help on the side of the road easily. It may have the effect of booting r’s out simply because the group shrinks.
[…] Beware The Intel Operation […]
a good mental discipline can be had be using the word “apparent” always mentally and verbally when appropriate. saying to yourself, “this girl is apparently in trouble,” primes your mind to look for more data before you act. It also helps when you tell people who are encouraging you to act in some vulnerable way. you can also use it as, “he is an apparently good person,” or “apparently honest,” you get the idea. in business, “this seems like an apparently good deal,” which when verbalized tells people you are not a pushover. you are telling your mind to be watchful always and apparently safe is not. helps me uncloak narcissists often.
There is a Japanese story something like this. A samurai has business in the Capital, and leaves armed, with his retainers, as he knows that banditry is rife in the area. As he’s headed to the Kyoto, ahead of him he sees a nobleman’s train with minor functionaries running ahead, clearing the street for whatever noble personage is riding along the rode. As is customary, the samurai orders his men to the side of the road, to put their arms away, and bow with their heads to the ground as the noble passes. The samurai also bows in that fashion. He hears them ride by, and is about to get up with his men and resume his journey when he feels a blade at his neck. He his head to see what’s going on, and all around him the “noble’s” retainers, heavily armed and armored, have blades to the necks of all of his own men. He’s instructed to stand, strip, and hand over all his valuables. He’s forced to comply, but both he and the bandits know that if the samurai had been on guard, if he expected treachery, he and his men would have been able to defeat the bandits easily.
In short, the wolf’s love of in-group loyalty and respect for hierarchy were used against him, and he was robbed by guile what would have remained securely his by force of arms.
I think a good role model for K is Odysseus if opponents do not fight fairly. Who hoodwinked the suitors into disarming themselves and slaughtered them.
The K that survive is not necessarily the strongest. But those who combine strength with cunning.
