A good article on what is going down in Puerto Rico:
The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday warned of a potential government shutdown in Puerto Rico and lengthy litigation if Congress doesn’t approve a debt restructuring plan for the U.S. territory soon.
Antonio Weiss, counselor to the U.S. Treasury secretary, issued the warning as House Republicans held hearings in Washington during a final push to address the island’s failing economy…
“There is no room for error in this economy,” he said. “The government remains open only because the governor authorized more than $1 billion in onerous and unsustainable emergency liquidity actions.”
Bear in mind, the US has no massive, financially superior organization above it to save it. It is a long ways off, and a lot of other governments will go down first, but at some point the US will not be able to borrow enough to pay off its debt and fund the government. Already the latest estimate is that will occur within ten years from now, but the longer you wait, the sooner the estimate becomes. The real date could be 2020, for all we know. At that point, you can’t conjure government out of thin air without the money.
My suspicion is the same forces driving the total domination of Donald Trump, to the point he could literally kill someone in the street and people would still support him, will motivate a policy of civil war against the government, waged simply through neglecting the sacrifices which would be necessary to keep the federal government operational. I suspect candidates will arise who will promise the ability to secede, and they will win, since their’s will be a campaign against the entire machine. It will be just like Donald, but more.
If the choice is massive sacrifices to keep the government running as it is today, or not sacrificing and allowing a Soviet style dissolution, I suspect people will opt for the dissolution. It will be less pain, it will disappear the national debt overnight, it will punish everyone in DC, and it will increase freedom immeasurably.
Oddly enough I suspect that on that day, wherever they are, the Founders will cheer.
As Nancy Pelosi would say, “Embrace the suck.”

Debt restructuring- That’s like getting a new credit card to pay off the others, no?

Well, there is the Federal Reserve, but even that has its limits. Great will be my joy the day that Washington’s politicians, bureaucrats, and lobbyists are roasting rats and pigeons over burning piles of $100 bills!
What cannot go on forever won’t.
You mean continue to win, since the Scottish referendum, the victory of the secessionists and Catalonia and even the rise of the Brexit supporters are all indications that this is already happening.
