You can store in salt domes, but they are a small part of the volume (mainly used to even out short term demand spikes) and even then you can’t draw them down heavily without risking the dome formation collapsing. That’s the problem with drawing down the strategic oil reserve — we might not be able to refill the salt domes even if we have the will.
The natural gas system is immense. As big as those salt domes are, there is still more gas simply filling the pipelines and distribution systems.
