This will be a measure of the fear when Donald wins:
A Florida daily newspaper is apologizing to readers for not being objective enough in its coverage of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The Daily Commercial, which serves Lake and Sumter counties, recently issued a “mea culpa” admitting that it hadn’t taken a balanced-enough approach to the 2016 presidential election. “Because we have limited space and resources, smaller papers are generally limited to covering the horse race — the day in-day out happenings on the campaign trail,” the paper explained in an open letter.
“Trump, who has been a big personality since he burst onto the scene as a major New York developer in the 1980s, could never seem to stay focused on his message — immigration, American jobs, international relations,” it continued. “He instead has devoted so much of his air time to saying outlandish things and picking fights with anyone, even his own party, who disagreed with him. He has demonized Republicans and the media, and then he wonders aloud why so many people and institutions have turned their backs on him.
The Daily Commercial said the media as a whole have undoubtedly been biased toward Mr. Trump, and that bias had trickled down to their paper.
Eric Hoffer wrote that leftists bite the hand that feeds them, and lick the boot that kicks them. It is true. Rabbitism is about “winning” without actually fighting. If Donald wins, they are out of plays. They tried and failed to turn the crowd on him. They can’t beat him face to face. And then he will have the power of the government. He could audit the hell out of them, deploy law enforcement to harass them, enforce pointless regulations like there is no tomorrow. He could do anything a liberal would do in his place, and that terrifies them.
That is a state of cognitive dissonance. Stand up to Trump and lose. There is only one way to turn off the amygdala at that point – total capitulation, to the point of becoming a Trump fanatic.
It will happen slowly. First, they will realize they may have been wrong in a place or two, and let it be known. When that releases a little of the tension of conflict in their mind they will take the next step, and admit Donald may have been right in a place or two. From there, a grudging admission will turn to an embrace, and the process of amygdala relief will be complete.
At that point, politics will be a joy, where their beliefs are reaffirmed by Donald, and the crowd is on their side.
That is how Reagan made the very word liberalism an epithet. And it is already happening all over again.
