The shipping company experienced a series of hit-and-run attacks by pirates who, instead of seeking a ransom for the crew and cargo, went after specific shipping containers and made off with high-value cargo.
“It became apparent to the shipping company that the pirates had specific knowledge of the contents of each of the shipping crates being moved,” the RISK team recounted in the report. “They’d board a vessel, locate by bar code specific sought-after crates containing valuables, steal the contents of that crate—and that crate only—and then depart the vessel without further incident.”
The targeted nature of the attack made it clear to the shipper that the pirates were somehow getting intelligence directly from their computer systems.
As time goes on, these techniques are like technology. What is elite level today, will be auctioned off on LabX for pennies on the dollar tomorrow – and that will get worse when the apocalypse begins. When computer companies begin laying off, as the Apocalypse dries up their work and their coder begin hacking, and the out of work engineers go rogue, and begin turning out elite level electronic devices custom to order, and the government spooks with no salary begin taking up side jobs, our presently civilized nation will turn into Lord of the Flies, only with elite level spying, night vision goggles, ad-hoc tactical assault teams operating with decent intelligence, and a law enforcement so overwhelmed it might as well not even be around.
If you have a large quantity of precious metals, keep a lot of cash on hand, store a lot of materials people will want, have food and comfort, or just walk around not looking emaciated when everyone else is starving, you will have to assume that you have become a target, and someone is watching you to plan their attack. The data is so ubiquitous, in so many places, you have to assume a thread will have been picked up somewhere.
When everyone is wanting, you can’t be too paranoid.
