Sound impossible that foam-based armor could stop armor piercing rounds? Testing has proved it is indeed possible.
In tests conducted by the development team, the foam body armor was able to defeat an armor-piercing bullet. And on impact, their foam smashed the bullet into powder.
To challenge the foam material with bullets, the team built a shield. The strike face – the side facing the weapon – was made with the new composite metal foam together with boron carbide ceramics. The backplates – the side that would face the user – were made of Kevlar.
In tests, the team shot at the foam body armor with 7.62 x 63 mm M2 armor-piercing round.
How well did it work?
Their foam absorbed the bullet’s kinetic energy.
The foam worked so well that an armor-piercing round could only penetrate less than an inch on the weapon-facing side of the shield.
On the side facing the warfighter’s body, the bullet was only able to cause an 8 mm indentation on the back.
Less than an inch of penetration, with a 30-06 AP round, and less than a centimeter of deflection on the opposite side. Wow.
Now I wouldn’t want to be absorbing the full kinetic energy of a 30-06 with my torso, but it would beat dealing with it absent the body armor. Of course, ideally this armor would line your vehicle, facilitating hasty exits from tricky situations. If you are hardened against a 30-06, you are hardened against a .308 and a 5.56, which would be most battle rifles right there.
A lot of things are coming together for the Apocalypse, which will separate the forward thinkers and planners from the rubes with no ability to prep for what is coming. The tools will be there, and knowing about them and acquiring them will be the difference between survival and culling.
The model of human we love, and which is so much different from what we have seen of late, existed for a reason, and that reason is about to return. Forward thinking and responding to potential threat will be the new norm.

[…] Foam Armor Defeats 30-06 AP Rounds […]
When that’s a spray-in foam, then we have hit the point that was posited in the 70s, where armor tech has surpassed offensive tech.
This is great. Type 4s and 50cals are beyond the reach of the vibrants and soon southwest PDs and Border Patrol will have cartel defeating plates. Now if the lawyers just stay out of the way.
